Medical Council Chief Executive Caroline Spillane is to leave the medical regulatory body in June to take up a new post of Director General of Engineers Ireland, the professional body for engineers.

Paying tribute to her, President of the Medical Council Prof Freddie Wood said: “Caroline has been a fantastic Chief Executive and has been an excellent colleague and adviser. She has overseen the evolution of the Council’s role in recent years, bringing about marked improvements in our processes.

“This emphasis on operational excellence has led to increased efficiencies and a more effective use of budget within the organisation, while her focus on collaboration with patients, doctors and partner organisations has made sure our decision making was informed by a range of views throughout the health system.”

Spillane has also led the development of research relating to the medical workforce, postgraduate training and the handling of complaints, which will influence positive change in the health sector in the coming years, Prof Wood said.

“While the Council and staff are disappointed that Caroline has chosen to move on, we wish her well as she takes on a new challenge outside the health sector. We will now commence the process to appoint a successor in the role to support the implementation of our strategy,” he commented.

Spillane added: “As I’ve overseen the Medical Council develop as an organisation, an opportunity has arisen in a completely different role for me, which will provide a new challenge. I will remain in the post until June and will continue to work with the Council and staff, as arrangements are made to appoint a successor.”
